MASTODON Writing/Recording Song For New Monsters Inc Movie, Guitarist Brent Hinds Talks New Album With MTV Hive

Members of MASTODON have been keeping busy as of late with different side projects, after releasing their latest studio effort "The Hunter" last year.

Less than an hour ago the band updated their Facebook page stating that they're currently working on a new song for the upcoming sequel to the Disney/Pixar movie, Monsters Inc titled "Monsters University" (in theaters summer 2013).

Concerning a new album, guitarist Brent Hinds recently talked with MTV Hive about writing new material and how it sounds; feeling optimistic about the new material; he hopes to hit the studio in January to record a new album. But he also stated that the band might tour in-support of the The Hunter for another year before releasing a new album.

An excerpt from the interview follows:
Currently, the group is in the writing phase for their next LP and Hinds is feeling optimistic about how it’s coming together. The band is doing a South American tour through late November, after which he’ll do a West End Motel tour, but then maybe, just possibly, Mastodon will go into the studio in January. “We’ve never put out an album a year,” Hinds says. “That would be unlike us, so maybe we could tour for another year on The Hunter. It’s very possible.”

As for what Hinds has been working on for Mastodon, the wait might be worth it. “A lot of the stuff I’m writing is in open G-minor,” he says, before explaining, “I’m playing a lot of slide guitar and just getting really Jimmy Page-y on the place and getting really eerie and Radioheadish and very spooky sounding.” Right now, he thinks he has about three songs’ worth of material, “or it could be one gigantic one,” he says straight-faced. “I haven’t made up my mind yet.”

No matter what happens, though, Hinds says the wheels are in motion. “Those dudes are always working,” he says of his bandmates. “There’s never really a shortage of music with Mastodon because all of us are working on something musically. I’m in good company. Just because they might stand in the middle of the stage or something, people might think, this is the leader, he must conduct everything, but we’re all the leaders. We spread the weight around.” Time will tell what that will mean on the next Mastodon release
