THE MARS CHRONICLES is an alternative metal band from France which are about to release their debut EP on May 13th through Send The Wood Music.

Our first encounter with the band was back in March when we had the pleasure of interviewing them to get a better idea of what to expect from the fold.

Last month, I received a promo copy of their upcoming EP (courtesy of the band's drummer, Morgan Berthet). Once I got a chance to sit down and listen to it, I was instantly hooked to what I heard.

The self titled EP is an intricate alternative metal offering leaning towards a progressive sound. The band proficiently balances things to offer a complex yet easily digested effort.

The band also creates a unique visual aspect for the listener before delving into the music, with their abstract image (as all members are covered in alien-like white paint, which can be seen in their promotional pictures, here).

Vocalist and mastermind, Devy Diameda, composed all music and lyrics featured on the EP and provides a stellar performance to accompany the rhythmically structured music present.
The band offers alternative metal with high technical proficiency.

The song "Abyss" starts off with a powerful meshuggah-like groove, strongly backed by pummeling drums to give it an overall galloping vibe. And "Hell Is Born" drives a foot-stomping riff into nu metal territory; the release is packed with influences from across genres.

Drum work on the EP is extremely varied and gives an overall organic sound to the effort. Songs like "Redefined" and "One and Only" are tightly structured around a highly complex drum pattern.

From thundering grooves and a solid drum section, to varied vocal pitches; The Mars Chronicles are one of the most promising acts to emerge onto the alternative metal scene in 2013.

Recommended for all fans of modern and progressive metal.
